Those who drastically change their diets can wreak havoc on their hair. A reduction in protein – like switching to a strictly vegetarian diet without proper balance nutritional intake – can facilitate hair loss. By adjusting diet, you can maintain the beauty and health of your hair. Iron is also essential in maintaining the integrity of your hair. Iron, vitamin E, and trace minerals like selenium, copper, and magnesium are essential in producing the proteins that make up hair. If you have recently experienced rapid, significant weight loss or if you are on a restricted calorie diet, and you have noticed an increased number of hairs on the floor, check your diet to ensure sufficient protein and iron intake levels.
Hand-in-hand with diet is exercise in terms of things that can affect your hair. Extreme exercise practices, particularly those focused on losing weight (both fat and muscle mass) can be detrimental to your outward appearance in terms of hair, skin, and nails. If the weight loss is significant – more than 15 pounds – you are likely going to see some hair loss. Once you get to your goal weight or reach a plateau, you should see this problems dissipate.
You should always check with your primary care doctor before you start any new diet or exercise regimen. In addition to your physician, you can also check with a nutritionist and a dermatologist, especially if you have stabilized your weight and are continuing to experience hair loss that is greater than normal, you need to see a specialist. Taking supplements may not be enough; extend periods of hair loss may be a sign of greater underlying problems than just an instability in your dietary intake.
