The holiday season truly is the most wonderful time of the year, but it’s not always wonderful for the health of your skin. The winter months can wreak havoc on your dermis. Cold, bitter winds can chap and irritate exposed skin, and your home’s heating system can leave your skin feeling dry and tight. Follow the tips below to get keep your skin comfortable while you prepare your turkey feast and start trimming the tree.
Humidifier
Investing in a good humidifier can prevent skin from over drying. Humidifiers work to gently push moisture into the air of your home, easing both your skin and your breathing. Your sinuses may thank you, too!
Moisterize
Moisterizing as part of your daily grooming routine can make a huge difference when it comes to protecting your skin from cold weather. Moisturizers that come in jars or tubes are better than ones in pump bottles. The thicker and greasier, the better.
Exfoliate, but not often
If your skin does become chapped and you start experiencing flaking, it’s okay to use a gentle exfoliant to remove dead skin cells. But don’t over-exfoliate! Exfoliating too aggressively or too often can make skin raw and more vulnerable to the cold.
Avoid overly hot water
As tempting as it is to unwind in a steamy shower during the winter months, hot water can leave your skin feeling extra tight. It is recommended that shower and bath temperatures warm, not scalding. A good rule of thumb: If your skin is turning pink, the water is too hot!
Dress smartly for the season
There are few winter activities more enjoyable than cozying up to the fire in your favorite oversized sweater. But not all fabrics are gentle on your skin. Wool and other itchy materials can irritate your skin and feel unpleasant long after you’ve removed the garment. We recommend looking for clothing made from cashmere or loose-knit fabrics. And if you just can’t say farewell to your favorite wool sweater, limit contact with your skin by wear an undershirt.
