We recently had the opportunity to learn more about Dr. May, his approach, and the path that led him to become a board-certified dermatologist.
What made you decide to pursue a career in dermatology? What did the path to get there look like for you?
From a scientific perspective, cancer and immunology were the two most interesting areas of medicine to me, and no field combines the two better than dermatology. From a practical perspective, I love that dermatology is a specialty where you get to meet a lot of patients and converse with them. There’s plenty of time to chat during a skin exam, which is not normal in most specialties!
What is your favorite aspect of being a dermatologist?
I love that dermatologists are able to not only find but also solve problems themselves. In much of modern medicine, making a diagnosis requires labs, tests, scans, et cetera. However, in dermatology, most of our diagnoses can be made “on the spot” in the clinic. On top of that, most of the diagnoses we make can either be well-controlled or even completely eliminated once we’ve identified them – like skin cancer when we catch it early!
What is your approach to treating your patients?
The two most important factors are:
(1) Listening closely to the patients’ thoughts and concerns, and
(2) Using that understanding to frame the way I explain their diagnoses, treatment options, and expectations in a way that is tailored to the aspects of their care that matter most to them – and in a way that they can easily understand!
What is your number one tip for taking care of your skin?
Focus on the basics; there is no panacea for skin care no matter what the label says! Skincare products have never been more overwhelming, with thousands of expensive products that often overpromise and under-deliver. Stick to good sunscreen, good moisturizer, and a small handful of topicals that have been proven to make a difference.
What is one thing you want your patients to know about you?
I want them to know that I take pride in my work. When my patients have good outcomes, it continues driving me to provide the best care that I can.
What do you like to do when you are not in the office treating patients?
I am passionate about studying and investing in biotechnology companies. This endeavor not only keeps me up to date on the newest cutting edge of dermatology but also other fields in medicine.
