We recently had the opportunity to learn more about Dr. Scripture, his approach, and the path that led him to pursue a career in medical and cosmetic dermatology services.
What made you decide to pursue a career in dermatology? What did the path to get there look like for you?
Since childhood, I knew I wanted to become a doctor. I started taking college courses at age 14 and never looked back. My path was International Baccalaureate at Fishers High School, undergraduate training and medical school at Indiana University, and dermatology residency at Dartmouth. I like everything—biochemistry, anatomy, medical procedures, art, aesthetics, and, most importantly, helping people get better. Dermatology is unique in that you get to help others get better by doing a little bit of everything, and that is why I chose to pursue it.
What is your favorite aspect of being a dermatologist?
My favorite aspect of being a dermatologist is using science and creativity to get results. Whether it be skin cancer, a mole, acne, or wrinkles, there is nothing more satisfying than identifying a problem and coming up with a solution. Plus, who doesn’t love draining a giant cyst?!
What is your approach to treating your patients?
I treat my patients the way I would want to be treated. I approach each person as an individual and formulate a plan that will help them. I truly love what I do, and I think this shows through how I treat others.
What is your number one tip when it comes to taking care of your skin?
One? What a hard question! Sunscreen and photoprotection are number one when it comes to caring for skin. Prevention is everything. However, this is only half of the story. If you are looking to improve or change your skin, retinoids are going to be a key player.
Answer this question: If you know me you would know…
The three best foods are tacos, pizza, and sushi.
What do you like to do when you are not in the office treating patients?
You’ll find me working on projects around the house, relaxing with my family by the lake, hiking with my dogs, running, cycling, or trying out the new restaurants in town.
