We recently had the opportunity to learn more about Shelby, her approach, and the path that led her to become a board-certified physician assistant. Here’s what she said:

What made you decide to pursue a career in dermatology? What did the path to get there look like for you?

I have always wanted to pursue a career that involves helping people, and I also have always loved science, so I knew the medical field would be a great fit. During PA school, I was originally very interested in cardiology, but I completed an elective rotation in dermatology and enjoyed the hands-on nature of the specialty along with the variety of conditions treated. After graduating PA school, I got my first job working in dermatology and haven’t looked back since!

What is your favorite aspect of being a dermatology physician assistant?

As a physician assistant in dermatology, I thrive on the challenges the specialty presents, from diagnosing complex skin conditions to mastering advanced treatment techniques. The ever-evolving nature of dermatology necessitates continuous learning and staying current with the latest research and developments. This constant pursuit of knowledge keeps the work stimulating and ensures I can provide the highest quality of care to my patients. The combination of intellectual rigor and the opportunity to make a tangible difference in patients’ lives makes dermatology incredibly fulfilling.

What is your approach to treating your patients?

I prioritize patient education and shared decision-making, ensuring that each patient fully understands their condition and the available treatment options. I believe that informed patients are empowered to make the best choices for their health. By fostering open communication and collaboration, my goal is to create a supportive environment where patients feel heard and valued.

What is your number one tip when it comes to taking care of your skin?

Wear your sunscreen – even on those cold, cloudy Indiana days!

What is one thing you want your patients to know about you?

I feel incredibly fortunate to be entrusted with their health needs — it is truly a privilege to provide patients with the best care and serve those within my community.

What do you like to do when you are not in the office treating patients?

I enjoy spending time with my family, finding new restaurants in the area (open to any recommendations!), cheering on the Purdue Boilermakers, doing DIY house projects, and baking.
