Aging Gracefully and Looking Natural

Since no one has discovered the fountain of youth yet, aging is something everyone has to deal with eventually. Fortunately, people are living longer, with life expectancy being closer to 80 in America. However, this means that many of us will spend the majority of our lives on the up side of 30 with aches, grays, and wrinkles. But this doesn’t have to be a painful, depressing, or even unattractive experience. In fact, aging can be empowering! Think of all the wisdom you will have, the memorable life experiences, and the growing number of people to live life with. Aging is the most natural process in the world that, when paired with the right attitude and actions, you can embrace to look and feel like your prime self, regardless of the number of years behind you. In addition to general optimism, confidence, and a take-charge attitude on life, here are a few practical tips you can start doing to ensure your aging journey is a happy and healthy one.

Diet and Exercise. It may seem like maintaining a healthy diet and exercising regularly are the answer to everything, but honestly, they really are! Even for reversing the effects of aging! Studies show that people over 40 who exercise regularly have healthier skin than their non-active peers. Exercising improves blood flow, releasing natural substances that stimulate healthy skin properties to give you a youthful glow. Exercise can actually slow down the rate at which cells age and die. And healthy eating is right behind it. A diet rich in antioxidants (read berries, green tea, and leafy greens), healthy omega-3 fats (fish), and herbs with cleansing nutrients (turmeric, garlic) can significantly reduce the effects of aging on your skin and body. Also, water, water, water!

Protect Your Skin. Vitamin D is actually great for your health, but research only recommends 20 minutes of sun exposure a day. Any more time than that, be sure to wear sunscreen with at least a 30 SPF. Avoid harsh exfoliates, tanning beds, and skin products or makeup loaded with chemicals. If you are interested in more details about healthy ways of caring for your skin, ask our staff at the Dermatology Center of Indiana about the medical-grade skin care products we offer.

Cosmetic Procedures. Grabbing life by the horns and embracing aging is a great attitude to have, but that doesn’t mean you have to love every wrinkle and sag. It is possible to enhance a few features as you get older while still looking natural and embracing aging. Botox and dermal fillers don’t eliminate wrinkles and folds, but they soften and reduce them. If you are interested in this kind of cosmetic rejuvenation, set up a consult with Dr. Guenthner or one of his physician assistants or nurse practitioners to see what is right for you.

Dr. Guenthner services Carmel, Danville, Franklin, and Lafayette along with many other cities around the State.  The Dermatology Center is ready to help you with any dermatology needs.
