Kybella: Do You Hate Your Double Chin?

If you’ve tried every diet and exercise plan imaginable but are struggling with unwanted upper neck and chin fat, you’re not alone. Many people who eat a healthy diet and exercise regularly still have difficulty eradicating the fat around their submental area. This fleshy region is usually referred as a double chin, although others may call it a turkey neck or turkey waddle.

What is Kybella?

Kybella is an FDA-approved medication which is used to dissolve fat in the submental/double chin area and improve the overall contour of the neck and jawline. It’s the first injection of its kind that’s used to dissolve unwanted fat of more commonly known as a double chin in the neck region. Composed of deoxycholic acid, Kybella is a naturally occurring chemical in the body that breaks down fat. Once the fats cells are destroyed, they are gone forever.

Traditional methods to treat excess fat under the chin and neck area require a neck lift and/or liposuction. For patients who aren’t surgical candidates, Kybella is a viable option for stubborn fatty deposits under the chin.

How is Kybella administered?

Kybella is a quick and effective outpatient procedure that is performed in our office. It’s administered in the same manner as other injectables such as Botox and dermal fillers. Kybella comes in vials and the exact number of vials a patient needs depends on the size the double chin. Typically, most patients will require two to four vials per treatment session, with fewer vials needed in subsequent treatments due to the reduction of fat from previous treatments.

What does procedure feel like?

Most patients experience only slight discomfort after undergoing treatment with Kybella. Patients will experience different degrees, but this is a normal part of the healing process.

How many Kybella treatments will I need?

Patients generally require two to six treatment sessions space one month apart for optimal results.

How long before I see results from Kybella treatments?

Results will depend on the amount of excess fat you have under your chin. The first few days after the procedure are hallmarked by swelling and possible bruising. Most patients begin to see positive results as quickly as three to four weeks after the first injection.
