Male Aesthetics

If you take a quick survey of the magazines by the grocery store checkout, you’ll probably notice an overwhelming selection of women’s magazines geared towards beauty and fashion. Most commercials on television are also targeted towards women, telling them to buy the latest lipstick or skin cream. However, insecurities don’t discriminate by gender. Men and women alike suffer from low-esteem related to the way they look.

Believe it or not, men are one of the fastest-growing demographics in the aesthetic industry. This poses a challenge because most research on beauty and aging has been primarily focused on women. However, men are more likely to participate in negative behavior that can accelerate the signs of aging, like smoking and not receiving preventive health care services or performing self-exams.

There are also considerable facial anatomical differences between men and women including larger cranial shape, more skeletal muscle mass, and distinctive subcutaneous fat distribution.  Men also have physically thicker skin throughout their entire bodies. In short, men and woman have different facial structure and due to these differences, men require a unique injection technique with Botox and dermal fillers to help minimize the signs of aging.

Men are also more likely to have a receding hair line or thinning hair, so the rate of men seeking help for hair loss is higher than women. According to the American Hair Loss Association, two-thirds of American men will experience some type of hair loss by the age of 35. By the age of 50, about 85% of men will have significantly thinning hair.

Aesthetic medicine is the term for medical specialties that focus on improving cosmetic appearance through the treatment of conditions like wrinkles, scare, cellulite, unwanted hair, moles, etc. This typically includes both surgical and non-surgical procedures in the areas of dermatology, plastic surgery, and reconstructive surgery.
